As any significant honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
